A Colour Boom in Tokyo

Emmanuelle Moureaux is a French architect who moved to Tokyo in 1996 following a decision she made to herself after the first two hours of her first solo trip to the enchanting city one year before. Having strong interests in Japanese literature and the visualisation of contemporary Tokyo eventually lead her to start “emmanuelle moureaux architecture + design” in 2003.

In an interview with Design Boom, Moureaux said that colour is often considered as a minor element in the field of architecture or interior design, the finishing touch of a scheme. Further inspired by the vibrant hues of the Tokyo cityscape, Moureaux came up with the design concept “Shikiri” to highlight the importance of colours. “Shikiri” means partition in Japanese and in context of her design concept, the dividing of space with colours — in forms of structural three-dimensional layers.

To mark the 10th anniversary in 2013 of the opening of her studio, Moureaux launched the 100 colors series as a way to express emotions from the experience of colors and layers of Tokyo. To date, Moureaux has completed and showcased 22 installations from this series, with the latest one titled Color of Time, which was presented at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art & Design. Color of Time emphasises two elements: the sensory element represented by colour, and the mathematical element represented by time.
