Habitual Listens Vol. 36: MAS1A

Southeast Asia’s Empress of Hiphop and Dancehall, MAS1A is a cultural ambassador from the Far Eastside. As an artist, MAS1A blends Hiphop, Dancehall and BIG Bass to create a signature sound that has gained her collaborations with the likes of Pharrell Williams, RZA (Wu Tang Clan), Talib Kweli and John Frusciante (Red Hot Chilli Peppers). MASIA continues groundbreaking work as the Creative Director of Singapura Dub Club and is currently completing her new album: Far East Empress.

For our 36th volume, MAS1A’s says: “I put together music that reminded me of lazy days in the island of Jamaica where we would ride on motorcycles between the resorts, all along the coast of Negri’s 7-mile beach. Rum punch and pool party-filled days would be punctuated with the booming bass of a hand-built sound system. After a siesta, we would roll out to the nighttime street parties around 1-2am, with everyone dressed in loud and statement fashion and danced unapologetically to dancehall and ragga beats. The night would end back by the ocean, with sand between your toes, the stars above and the imagination of how much fun this life can be.”
